First job: (Unofficial) Custodian’s Helper - At ten years of age, my father was the custodian at my neighborhood elementary school, which I attended. After school, I would hurry home to do my homework. Afterwards, I would run back to school to work with him. (Official) Groundskeeper Assistant - Summer Youth Employment Program

Birthplace: Alliance, Ohio (city just south of Cleveland, Ohio)

Years at FCEOC: 17yrs, 10months

Best Advice ever received: Keep God first (Mom’s advice)

Favorite Advice I give: No one in the world is more or less worthy, more or less important than you.

Favorite restaurant: Mr.Ed’s BBQ, Louisiana Home-style Cooking located at Tulare and E St.

Proudest moment: The birth of my daughter, Portia Ann Hairston-Clay, now a credentialed teacher for the Cincinnati Unified School District (Ohio).

Greatest personal accomplishment: Being recognized by the Fresno City Council for my years of “life long commitment to community service” by proclaiming June 2, 2005, as Samuel Hollis Hairston Day in the city of Fresno at last years SOUL graduation ceremony.

Best vacation I’ve taken: The Caribbean Islands…Yeah Mon!!

Favorite weekend activity: Anywhere playing basketball

Last good movie I saw: Malcolm X, by Spike Lee

Scariest Experience: After a near fatal car accident, in which I broke three vertebrae in my neck, before I went into emergency surgery, I knew that if it wasn’t successful, I could die or be a quadriplegic for life. It was successful! “Isn’t God Good…All The Time.”
