Take Action! Program Works!

"I was so excited as a new employee with EOC because I have never worked for an organization that takes an interest it is employee's health. Initially, I thought to take part in the Weight Watchers program but wasn’t ready for the financial and daily commitment of adding points. So, instead I have been participating in the Take Action Program. I just completed my second cycle and to date I have lost 14 pounds! Just eating healthier and working out 3 times a week has helped me create a new lifestyle. Thanks!"

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
January 15, 2007
Martin Luther King, Jr. , (January 15, 1929-April 4, 1968) Martin Luther attended segregated public schools in Georgia, graduating from high school at the age of fifteen; he received a B. A. degree in 1948 from Morehouse College, a distinguished Negro institution of Atlanta. In 1951 he enrolled in graduate studies at Boston University, receiving his PhD in 1955. In Boston he met and married Coretta Scott, a young woman of uncommon intellectual and artistic attainments. Two sons and two daughters were born into the family. In December, 1955, he organized the first African American nonviolent demonstration, the bus boycott.

The boycott lasted 382 days. On December 21, 1956, after the Supreme Court of the United States had declared unconstitutional the laws requiring segregation on buses, African-Americans and whites rode the buses as equals. During these days of boycott, King was arrested, his home was bombed, he was subjected to personal abuse, but at the same time he emerged as an African-American leader. He was named Man of the Year by Time magazine in 1963; and became not only the symbolic leader of American blacks but also a world figure. At the age of thirty-five, Martin Luther King, Jr., was the youngest man to have received the Nobel Peace Prize.

Indoor Safety

  • Do NOT bring heating devices into the home that are intended for outdoor use , such as barbecues and other cooking equipment or other fuel burning devices. These items can produce deadly carbon monoxide.
  • Do NOT use your stovetop or oven as a primary source of heat.

Outdoor Precautions

  • Insulate any water lines that run along exterior walls to avoid breakage.
  • Pet Care - bring them indoors. If you cannot bring them inside, provide adequate shelter to keep them warm and make sure that they have access to unfrozen water.

Personal Safety

  • Recognize symptoms of over-exposure to the cold.
    • Confusion, dizziness, exhaustion and shivering are signs of hypothermia. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.

As the elderly are more susceptible to cold temperatures, take the initiative to check in on your older family members and neighbors.
