Many believe that Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of Mexican independence; but in fact it commemorates the victory of the Mexican Army over the French Army in what is currently known as “La Batalla de Puebla” (The Battle of Puebla). This battle took place in the morning of May 5, 1862; an army of 4,000 ill-equipped Mexican soldiers led by General Zaragoza and Colonel Profirio Diaz defeated an army of 8,000 well-equipped French soldiers, who until then were undefeated.
