| At 78 years young, Grandpa J.C. Williams is not showing any signs of slowing down. Earlier this year, he was honored with the Senior Volunteer of the Year Award for volunteering more than 1,200 hours in 2007 at Sanctuary Youth Shelter.
“Grandpa J.C. Williams exemplifies the spirit of sharing and caring with every action,” says Foster Grandparent Program Director Vicki Lopes. “He lends a patient ear and is always present in love, heartfelt wisdom and solid guidance as he mentors these troubled youth.”
Staff members credit Grandpa J.C.’s time and dedication to helping elevate the youth’s self-esteem, assisting them in using effective non-violent coping skills, and enhancing their emotional security along with improved social skills. Despite health challenges, Grandpa J.C. perseveres as he selflessly shares pearls of wisdom that support and encourage the youth in cultivating self-discipline and character development.
Prior to volunteering the Youth Shelter, Grandpa J.C. mentored youth at Fresno County Juvenile Hall. In total, Grandpa J.C. as spent 11 years as a Foster Grandparent volunteer.
