.
Each year this very special occasion provides an opportunity to share appreciation with the grandparents for their valuable service to our community, along with a chance to highlight an important facet of the Foster Grandparent Program. This year’s theme, Helping Hands, points to the value of partnership as an essential piece that forms the fabric of the Foster Grandparent Program’s vision and mission. The “star of the show” was Grandma Eddie Edwards, who at 87 years young, was recognized for 25 years of sterling volunteer service. Grandma Eddie mentored youth at Fresno County Juvenile Hall for 17 years and continued with 8 more years of loving volunteer service preparing children at Maple Vista Head Start Preschool for kindergarten readiness. Executive Director Roger Palomino shared poignant, personal memories of Grandma Eddie during her tenure at juvenile hall. Mr. Palomino also imparted words of inspiration relating to the vital role of family in the lives of young people as the first and most fundamental partnership. He went on to validate the service of grandparent volunteers who often fill a void for children who lack a functional partnership with family members.
The theme of Helping Hands partnership was woven throughout the ambiance of the recognition luncheon as well, demonstrated by quilts fashioned by Grandma Eddie’s hands that were on display to the delight of guests. Partners of the Foster Grandparent Program provided fabulous quotes about the importance of partnership and these citations were read aloud creating a grand finale for the festivities.
Joe Martinez, with our Sanctuary Street Outreach & Safe Place Outreach and a Foster Grandparent Community Advisory group member, was acknowledged as the recipient of the 2008 Nick Bronzan Spirit of Sharing & Caring Award to commemorate his long term partnership with the Foster Grandparent Program and he offered the following quote: “Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. At EOC Sanctuary Youth Services, these valued characteristics hold true for our Foster Grandparents when a life has been impacted by these simple, but important acts of kindness, and words of wisdom.”
