| Being a great leadership coach is much more than simply encouraging employees to reach their full potential. As our management staff learned during this year’s Spring Leadership Forum, leadership coaching is about setting employees up for success, offering them both positive feedback and constructive criticism, and ensuring they have the resources necessary to succeed.
With Chukchansi Park’s 600 Club serving as the backdrop, Leadership Coach Kimberly Kincheloe taught managers an invaluable tool that can help troubleshoot barriers and ensures an employee can successfully complete a project – DCOM, Direction, Competence, Opportunity, and Motivation.
Ms. Kincheloe encouraged managers to apply DCOM to each task before assigning it. Managers should ask themselves:
Direction – Have we ensured employees are clear about the expected outcome, what they need to do, and why their actions are important?
Competence – Does the employee have the skills and knowledge needed to perform the task?
Opportunity – Does the employee have the necessary resources to enable them to successfully accomplish the task? If not, how can we assist them in obtaining the appropriate resources?
Motivation – Is the employee motivated to complete the task?
But, you don’t have to be a manger to utilize and benefit from DCOM; DCOM yourself. Next time your boss gives you an assignment, ask yourself if you’ve been given clear direction and understand what is expected of you, if you have the skills and knowledge needed to complete the task, if you have access to resources, and if you’re motivated and understand the significance of completing the project at hand. |
