Volunteers Recognized for Commitment to Community

“Grandma” Mary R Simmons with our Foster Grandparent Program and AmeriCorps member Aundree Rodriguez were recognized during HandsOn Central California’s Hands Across the Valley Awards luncheon. The event celebrated outstanding volunteers. Both Grandma Simmons and Audree were finalists in the Senior Volunteer and Adult Volunteer categories, respectively.

Grandma Simmons has served at King Elementary School for over 9 years, where she continues to be an active supporter of the Children’s African Dance Troupe. During her tenure as a volunteer with the Foster Grandparent Program, Grandma Simmons has contributed over 10,000 hours to benefit more than 1,000 children in the west Fresno community; she has made significant contributions toward raising the literacy skills of at-risk children. Grandma Mary is well known throughout the local community as the Queen of Flowers and well loved for her spirit of generosity. She donates personalized, custom-made corsages, flower arrangements, colorful hats and decorative flower pens that communicate the essence of love and add the element of nature’s beauty to special occasions or school celebrations. Through extending her helping hand Grandma Mary has touched many a heart, her sparkling gems of wisdom have shined a guiding light to enlighten many a young ones’ way in life. She has also been a member of the Mothers Board at her church for the past 7 years.

Local Conservation Corps Fresno Safe and Proud Neighborhoods AmeriCorps Program member Aundree Rodriguez serves at the Parlier Boys and Girls Club where she develops and implements creative safety based programs for club youth. To date, she has served 1,300+ throughout the past 19 months. In addition to serving her community through national service, Audree also volunteers her free time to local youth organizations, serving as an instructor, mentor, and coach. Her tireless efforts to make her community a safer and better place to live make her an extraordinary volunteer.
