Shelter Youth Brighten Senior Spirits

By: Lakeasha Miles, Sanctuary Youth Shelter Education & Safety Coordinator

“You are not alone” – that was the message six youth from the Sanctuary Youth Shelter delivered to the residents of Golden Living Center and Hope Manor Convalescent Homes father’s day weekend. The youth spent the day with the men and women who live in the facilities and distributed hand-made picture frames, bracelets, and Father’s Day cards.

“This is an awesome experience,” exclaimed one of the youth. “I felt good about helping out and seeing a smile on their faces,” she adds.

During their visit, the youth shared a bit about themselves with their new found friends; the seniors, in turn, told the youth about their lives and even shared their pearls of wisdom with the group.

The young men and women participated in this event to show those who may not have loved ones, that they are not alone and that they have people who are willing to come visit them they wanted to make this holiday special for someone else. Community integration activities such as this benefit the youth by allowing them an opportunity to show their appreciation for others in their community.
