Last month, our Rural Youth Prevention Project’s (RYPP) Selma Youth Council felt the positive impact it can make with the success of their “Bowling for Haiti / Chile Earthquakes Fundraiser” held at Freeway Lanes in Selma.
About 50 youth came out to support RYPP’s Selma Youth Council and, in turn, helped raise approximately $220 for earthquake relief. Monies raised will be split evenly between both The American Red Cross’ Central Valley Chapter’s Haiti and Chile Earthquake Relief Funds. Participants enjoyed four hours of bowling, raffle prize drawings, and danced to the music of DJ Jeff Santiago.
The entire event was organized by the young group; from partnering with The American Red Cross’ Central Valley Chapter to seeking sponsorships from local businesses. Members of our RYPP’s Selma Youth Council said they “had a great time bowling and loved helping The American Red Cross raise money for the earthquake relief.”
The event was a huge success, not because of the monies raised for the earthquake relief funds, but because members of our Selma Youth Council were able to experience how partnerships with other agencies can help everyone reach a common goal.
RYPP’s Selma Youth Council focuses on addressing the issue of underage drinking in the community. The success of this event is a great accomplishment for the program. Just by being involved in positive community activities, it reduces the chances of these youth engaging in negative behaviors.
