Grandma Curtis – Foster Grandparent volunteer, role model and mentor to SOUL students and Agency staff alike – passed away last week. She was 87 years old.

For more than two decades, Grandma Curtis served as a volunteer with our Foster Grandparent Program and impacted the lives of more than 15,000 youngsters at The Marjaree Mason Center, our Sanctuary Youth Shelter, and at our School of Unlimited Learning. Earlier this year, Grandma Curtis was recognized for her dedication to helping youth and young adults and her commitment to bettering our community; she was awarded the 2010 California Senior Community Leader Award and the California Wellness Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award.

The news of Grandma’s passing greatly affected SOUL students. They have all expressed the impact Grandma Curtis made in their lives in poems and songs. Student Bryndon Williams wrote a special poem titled “I Love You Grandma”.

A warm embrace
Of love and care
Loving others
Like a kid at the fair
Teaching history
Without a book
People come in
Just to watch and look
While you never showed
The pain and hurt
The love in you made it work
Love others is what you lived by
Now in the arms of the King
The greatest love you have now found
