Board Action

During November’s Board meeting, Commissioners, staff and meeting attendees heard from Transitional Living Center participant Amorette Stephenson and her story of triumph and tribulation.

Amorette survived a seven year relationship plagued by domestic violence. When she finally gained the courage to leave, she quickly discovered that she didn’t have anywhere to go. Amorette and her children were free from domestic violence, but were homeless. “We moved from place to place every three days for almost 10 months and just when I was about to give up I heard about TLC,” recalled Amorette. “TLC has saved my life from abuse and gave me the strength and courage to overcome my obstacles. Since I've been in TLC they have helped me participate in counseling and parenting classes, complete life skills workshops, learn about resources, and they have helped my children transition through developmental stages. They have been the light in our lives in a very traumatic time for me and my children. They don't just help you with a safe living place they help change and restore lives.”

The board also heard from Nicole Natsues. Before entering TLC 1, Nicole suffered from years of drug addition. While at TLC 1, she obtained employment, attended school, continued her aftercare plan with her substance abuse treatment program, and eventually graduated the TLC 1 program. She then entered the Homeless Prevention and Rapid Rehousing program operated by Sanctuary and Youth Services. Nicole has now been clean and sober 550 days, lives in an apartment independently, and holds a full-time job. She has regained her driver’s license, and will be purchasing her first car next month. “I didn’t know how to live on my own until TLC taught me,” said Nicole as she fought back tears. “I am achieving things I never knew I could.”

The Board also to action on the following items:

Board approved the 08/09 State FTA 5310 Vehicle Grant Award. This grant awards 9 wheelchair accessible vehicles to our Transit Systems to serve the elderly and disabled population.
