| The work of Edgar Allan Poe proved to be an entertaining and frightening five evenings at the Sanctuary Theater. Fresno County Public Library and National Endowment for the Arts featured several of Poe’s stories and poetry in "Tales of Terror", free performances from the California Public Theatre. The play proved to be entertaining for our Sanctuary youth, but was also educational for four Transitional Living Center (TLC) residents.
TLC residents were interviewed and four were selected as paid interns working behind the scenes stagehands and ushers. "It was a great experience and I loved having the opportunity to participate and learn more about the work that goes on behind the curtains," said David, TLC youth resident and stagehand.
In addition, Sanctuary and Youth Services hosted a concession stand during the shows intermission for fundraising. Theatergoers purchased snacks and drinks while others elected to donate money; Sanctuary was able to raise nearly $500.
"The themes of the show blended right in with Halloween since many of Poe’s work tend to be dark, creepy, and spooky," said Alphonso Russ, SOS Outreach Worker who managed to attend every performance at Sanctuary Theater.
Whether they were merely spectators or worked on-set, "Tales of Terror" was a unique experience for our youth. The chilling work of Poe sent shivers down their spines while creating a new experience for the stage.
