Sanctuary Participant Enjoy a
Night Out on the Town

By:
Evelyn Gonzalez, Sanctuary TLC-3 Program Assistant and
Shanieka McAllister, Sanctuary Shelter Youth Care Specialist

Christmas came early for Sanctuary and Youth Services participants and their families. A group of 50 Sanctuary clients and their families was treated to an evening at the theater and a walk through “A Miracle on Fulton Street” – a winter wonderland complete with Christmas carolers and Disney characters.

“We got to hear Cornerstone Church's choir singing Christmas carols and their voices were beautiful,” recalls Shanieka McAllister, Sanctuary and Youth Services Youth Care Specialist. “There were games … it felt like a mini carnival. There were free prizes for all the kids who played games, and everyone was a winner.  We enjoyed seeing the Grinch dressed up as Santa Clause, which was hilarious.”

After a stroll through “A Miracle on Fulton Street”, the group made its way to Warnors Theater where they caught a showing of Shakespeare’s Hotel. “It had a great introduction with a large fancy organ that was lowered down from the ceiling while the organist was playing,” says McAllister. A Sanctuary client adds, “It was like the Jester was reading us a story while they acted it out! I really liked everything that night. They used lots of comedy and modernized the language. The entire play was filled with comedy but there was an unexpected ending; every single character died at the end! We were all very shocked!”

Kind individuals who purchased tickets to the play made the evening possible. For every $15 tickets sold, $10 went toward Toys for Tots and $5 went toward the purchase of a Shakespeare’s Hotel ticket for a Sanctuary and Youth Services client. “We would like to thank all employees and community partners for their donations,” says Sanctuary Director Michelle L. Tutunjian. “Their generosity enabled us to provide our participants and their families with an unforgettable experience.
