Approximately 70 of California’s youth population came together last month at California Coalition for Youth’s Annual Taking Action Conference. The youth enjoyed a very moving keynote speech, an awards dinner, and special recognition by former California State Senator John Burton.
During the course of the conference, participants attended workshops relating to runaway and homeless youth. On the final day of the conference, youth marched to our state’s Capitol and held a rally on the south steps. Speakers at the rally included the youth, Assemblyman Beall, and Senators Lieu and Lowenthal. The remainder of the day included meetings with legislators where youth were given the opportunity to advocate for legislation affecting their population.
I learned a lot about issues that legislators deal with throughout the day and those who ask for their support,” said TLC client Angelica, following her legislative visits. TLC clients Angelica and Victoria received a special tour of the Capitol, arranged by Assemblyman Perea’s office, which included going up to the cupola – the top of the Capitol building. “The Capitol was a great experience because I was able to have a one of a kind tour that not every tourist gets. I will not forget the opportunity to see Sacramento from the highest part of the Capitol,” shared Angelica.
