Last month, SOUL paid final tribute to Grandma Emma Curtis for her years of dedication and service to SOUL students as a volunteer through our Foster Grandparent program.
Grandma Curtis passed peacefully in her sleep on October 7, 2010. SOUL staff and students honored Grandma Curtis’ memory through special poems and reflections read by students. SOUL’s music class played special songs dedicated in her memory. The special tribute ended in the dedication of a beautiful bench with Grandma Curtis name inscribed on it.
The ceremony culminated with the entire crowd, led by Sam Hairston and SOUL students, “raising the roof” by singing “Oh Happy Day”. The bench resides in the place where Grandma Curtis sat and waited to greet everyone who walked in the door with a warm and embracing hug. She loved all of us unconditionally. Her work was not in vain!
