Students Impress Community
at Holiday Open House

The corpsmembers and students at our Local Conservation Corps’ (LCC) and YouthBuild Charter School of California Central proudly showed off their skills and talents at their Holiday Open House held at the Reverend Edward L. Swillis Neighborhood Youth Center in west Fresno. Lead by the corpsmembers and YouthBuild’s Student Senate Council, these young adults worked hard to create an event that would represent all aspects of their experiences in the vocational training and education program.

With over 100 community supporters attending the event, their hard work surely paid off. The event included multiple displays and interactive examples of all the activities and services offered to young people through LCC and YouthBuild Charter School of California Central. Members of the charter school’s Music Mentoring Club offered guests a special treat when corpsmembers and students took the stage to perform songs, poems and speeches.

Rounding out the experience, the computer lab was transformed into a media studio. Students led the audience through a live podcast which was picked up as far away as Japan.

Throughout the three hour open house, many guests expressed their appreciation and admiration to the hardworking young adults, commending them for making the commitment to improving themselves and their community.

“These students are making a change for the better,” said Susan Carter, Assistant Director of EOC’s Local Conservation Corps. “Many of these young men and women have faced many harsh realities making them think their chances of receiving something like a high school diploma were over. Now they are working towards their diploma and have the opportunity to enroll in our paid vocational training program. They are proud to show off their hard work.”
