What is the program’s goal? The goal of the Elkhorn Pilot Project is to be a catalyst for the development of social, emotional, and cognitive awareness to foster drug-free lifestyles, and promote norms discouraging alcohol and other drug abuse.

When was the program established at EOC? August 2003

Who do you help (client base)? Incarcerated males within the Fresno County Elkhorn Correctional Facility (Boot camp).

What are the eligibility requirements? All cadets within the Elkhorn Correctional Facility receive services.

How many clients do you serve monthly/annually? The program served roughly 360 youth in 2006-2007.

Tell us about one of your “success stories” In 2007, 35 program participants completed a Drug Knowledge pre-test and 42 completed the post-test. The percentage of correct answers on the pre-test score was 40.9% compared to 80.4% on the post-test score.

Anything else you’d like to tell us about your program? The Elkhorn Pilot Project provides alcohol and drug prevention activities to 14 – 18 year-old incarcerated males residing in the Elkhorn Correctional Facility. The 10-week educational program is facilitated by the Youth Project Coordinator and utilizes the Residential Student Assistance program, Preventing and Reducing Substance Abuse in Residential Facilities, best practice curriculum.

The Youth Project Coordinator also contributes to a student study team that discusses individual care planning for minors entering the Elkhorn facility.

The Program measures numerous outcomes that reflect decreases in appropriate risk factors at the individual domain. Assessments also measure increases in protective factors within this domain.
