PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT:
Local Conservation Corps Recycling Program

Name of program : Local Conservation Corps (LCC) Recycling Program

What is the program’s goal? The goals of the Department of Conservation, our funding source, is to “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” California Redemption Value (CRV) beverage containers in the State of California. LCC’s Recycling Program helps accomplish this goal by educating residents of Fresno and Madera counties about recycling while offering a convenient opportunity to recycle away from home. Our focus is on CRV plastic bottles, aluminum cans, and glass bottles. We are also a certified E-waste collection program and will collect televisions and computer monitors free-of-charge.

When was the program established at EOC? Local Conservation Corps’s Recycling Program was established in 1993. The program is funded by a grant through the California Department of Conservation.

Who do you help (client base)? LCC’s Recycling Program offers CRV collection services to bars/restaurants, schools, office buildings, parks, curbside recycling programs in the towns of Orange Cove, Biola and Parlier and at special events held throughout Fresno County.

What are the eligibility requirements? Potential recycling customers should contact LCC at (559) 264-1048 to set up collection services. Paper and cardboard is not accepted.

How many clients do you serve monthly/annually? Through our CRV recycling program, including our residential curbside, offices, bars/restaurants, and special events, we serve thousands of residents on a monthly basis.

Who is the current program manager? Shawn Riggins

How many employees work for this program? LCC’s Recycling Program consists of 9 staff and 36 corpsmembers (youth trainees.)

Where is your office / are your offices located? LCC’s Recycling Program is located at 1371 Stanislaus Ave, Fresno. There is a satellite-recycling site, which operates out of the City of Orange Cove.

Tell us about one of your “success stories” LCC views its Schools Recycling Program as a success story because of what it accomplishes for local teachers. LCC provides CRV recycling at 66 schools throughout Fresno and Madera counties. This program is special because it provides teachers another avenue to receive funding for their classrooms. Because of reduced educational budgets across the state, many teachers have been forced to reach into their own pockets to help pay for supplies for the children in their classroom. When LCC adds a school to its recycling program, we create an account for the teacher and school. On a weekly basis, LCC crews go out to the schools and gather the CRV collected by young students. At the end of the month, a check is sent to the teachers. The winning classrooms in the program also receive a pizza party at the end of the semester. We have received many letters from grateful teachers and students who have used the funds to go on field trips and pay for school supplies. One classroom erected a memorial shrine at their school dedicated to the victims of 9/11, all paid for by the bottles and cans the students collected during the year.

Anything else you’d like to tell us about your program? We’re always looking for new businesses, particularly bars or restaurants to pick up recycling products. Call Shawn Riggins at the LCC at 264-1048 or email at shawn.riggings@fresnoeoc.org for details about the recycling program.
