Program Americorps: Shelter Outreach Services (SOS) and Education Award Only Programs
   
Description The SOS provides outreach services, which include case management, referrals, supportive services and tutoring to over 4,500 at risk youth or those who run away from home each year. The program also provides rehabilitation and weatherization of homeless shelters. The AmeriCorps program enrolls 20 full time members each program year; 5 as tutors, 5 as outreach workers and 10 as a construction crew. The Education Award Only program is offered to ALL LCC corpsmembers at the time of enrollment. Corpsmembers can earn scholarship funds in the amount of up to $4,725 for service/work of at least 1,700 hours per year.

Services Services include rehabilitation and weatherization of homeless shelters, tutoring and conducting outreach to vulnerable youth. AmeriCorps members participate in a citizenship curriculum, career planning and on an Advisory Council. Members also become CPR and First Aide certified and earn an educational award of $4,725 for the completion of 1700 hours of service.

Eligibility Criteria Youth (ages 18 - 23), willing to further their education and interested in obtaining rehabilitation, weatherization, tutoring, and outreach skills. Individuals accepted into the program have to pass a Department of Justice clearance to work at the EOC Sanctuary. Must be a U.S. citizen or a Permanent Resident.

Legislative Mandates/Requirements GO SERV administers AmeriCorps grants under the provisions of the National and Community Service Trust Act of 1993. Since its inception, GO SERV has secured and disseminated over $161 million in AmeriCorps funding from the Corporation for National and Community Service to local and statewide public and nonprofit agencies that have created opportunities for over 27,000 AmeriCorps members to serve in California.

Historical Information The Corporation for National and Community Service was established in 1993 to engage Americans of all ages and backgrounds in community-based service. The Corporation supports a range of national service opportunities through AmeriCorps, Learn and Serve America and National Senior Service Corps. AmeriCorps provides thousands of Americans of all ages and backgrounds with full and part time opportunities to serve their communities and build the capacity of grassroot organizations to meet local environmental, education, public safety, or other human needs.
   
Mission Shelter Outreach Service (SOS) AmeriCorps is dedicated to providing shelter, education, and outreach to runaway and homeless youth in Fresno using the resources of twenty energetic SOS AmeriCorps members and the expertise and resources of five partners.
   
Goals Ten SOS AmeriCorps members will be recruited and trained to rehabilitate and weatherize five homeless shelters, group home/transitional housing and domestic violence shelters. Ten others will provide education, outreach, one- on-one group tutoring, and personal development experiences to 900 runaway and homeless youth. LCC plans to enroll 160 corpsmembers in the Education Award Only component.
   
Measurable Outcomes Increased knowledge of citizenship curriculum, development of a career plan including resumes and CPR/First Aide certified. Rehabilitate five shelters, group home/transitional housing and domestic violence shelters and outreach to 900 runaway and homeless youth through one-on-one group tutoring and personal development experiences. 160 corpsmembers will be enrolled in the Education Award Only program.
