This bill known as the Thompson-Maddy-Ducheny-Ashburn Welfare to Work Act of 1997, changes the California welfare system. The bill brings California’s welfare system into compliance with the provisions of the Federal Welfare reform legislation known as the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act, which was signed into law by President Clinton on August 22, 1996. Assembly Bill 1542 renames the Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) program. The new name is California Work Opportunity and Responsibility to Kids (CalWORKs) program. The CalWORKs program has made significant changes to the California cash assistance program.
