Program Youthbuild Fresno
   
Description YouthBuild Fresno is a federal program funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and is operated within EOC=s Local Conservation Corps (LCC). The YouthBuild program provides individualized instruction and support for YouthBuild trainees, including construction training, an array of academic services (GED, high school diploma, vocation/technical instruction), counseling, case management and leadership development. The 12 months program provides the youth with the opportunity to complete their high school education, obtain leadership and construction skills.

Eligibility Criteria Youth (ages 18 - 24), high school drop-out, interested in obtaining constructions skills. Individuals accepted into the program have to meet income guidelines for economically disadvantaged, and meet criteria of target population.

Historical Information YouthBuild USA was founded in 1988 by Dorothy Stoneman, who was the director of the Youth Action Program in East Harlem where the YouthBuild model was developed. By 1993 the YouthBuild Coalition had succeeded in getting the federal YouthBuild program created in the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Today there are more than 200 programs in rural and urban communities all across the nation.

Goals To provide youth with an opportunity to complete their high school diploma or GED, obtain construction and vocational skills, and develop improved self-esteem, values, and become motivated to obtain a better future for themselves and their families.
   
Measurable Outcomes High School diplomas/GEDs, job placements and improved scores in TABE test.
   
Other Unique Information

By offering comprehensive, personalized instruction and support, these trainees develop improved self-esteem, enhanced values, and they become motivated to set goals to obtain a better future for themselves and their families. Leadership, counseling and individualized services are major components of this program, and while obtaining constructions skills and building housing for low-income and needy families, these trainees develop pride, self-esteem and become contributing members of their community.
